NL Fisher mourns the loss of Kevin Kerwin. Our thoughts, prayers and condolences go out to his family and his remarkable circle of friends and acquaintances.
A life to be celebrated. A life lived to the fullest. Kevin worked hard and played hard and in doing so he made remarkable contributions to the oil and gas industry in western Canada and, more specifically, to NL Fisher Supervision & Engineering Ltd.
Kevin was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on November 9, 1955. He was wildly competitive and very athletic from a young age. He was especially passionate about golf and hockey while enjoying many other sports, including skiing, which enticed him to move closer to the mountains in Calgary.
Kevin split his schooling between the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Regina. Kevin was extremely proud of his Saskatchewan roots – a factor that strongly influenced his character, values, personality and work ethic. He was a junior member at the Regina Golf Club, a loyal fan of the Riders, and someone who always looked forward to going back home.
Kevin was truly an engineer’s engineer. It was only a matter of time before the oil patch and Calgary came calling. Kevin was a natural fit and excelled at his profession. He worked hard and honoured the professional values captured in “The Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer.” He was proud to be an engineer.
And outside of work - whether it was golf tournaments, hockey leagues or his favorite time of the year, the Calgary Stampede - Kevin could always be found giving back to his community and enriching others. This included driving the legendary “Stagecoach” for many years through the streets of Calgary during Stampede, shuttling clients, friends, and family to various events and activities.
As an organization, much of NL Fisher’s foundation and identity was derived from the values, ethics and professionalism of Kevin. He was a mentor and friend to CEO and President Mike Cameron, who reflected on their relationship: “Words cannot describe my gratitude and appreciation for Kevin. He has been one of the most influential people in both my personal and professional life and I try to instill his professionalism daily throughout the organization.”
Peter Cameron has taken over responsibility for the Stagecoach as Driver #3. He will maintain the vehicle and continue to offer its services for charities and community events. In doing so, he and NL Fisher hope to commemorate and continue Kevin’s legacy and contributions. Peter commented that: “Kevin had a gift for making sure everyone was having a good time. He often went above and beyond to enhance a party or event and the Stagecoach is a direct reflection of his generosity and good fun. I smile and think of Kevin every time I fire up the old girl.”
We feel very fortunate that Kevin was in town and visited our office shortly before he passed away. Kevin sipped on a beer and shared some of his incredible stories. Kevin had given Peter Cameron an old Stagecoach “calling card” months before – identifying him as Driver #2, following Art Brotzel as the original Driver #1. The cards were replicated and a new set arrived only two days before Kevin’s death. In memory of Kevin, we will have these cards displayed and available at Kevin’s celebration of life.
So be on the lookout this Stampede as the Stagecoach will be ripping around town with friends on board, water guns soaking onlookers, and the NL Fisher Flag proudly in tow. A homage and tribute to Kevin – professional engineer, leader, friend, storyteller and forever Driver #2.
We will miss you Kevin,
Kevin John Kerwin
